What to Know about Smart Lock Selection

Published June 6, 2025

As we all know Locks are not all created equal. This rule applies to smart locks as well. Here are some important things to consider.

  1. Manufacturer matters? There are many “smart locks” being sold on amazon. Most are being made by tech firms and not lock companies. This means that while their software may be decent they don’t tend to have the expertise when it comes to actual physical security. I find, that due to this lack of knowledge, they skimp out on some key features such as hardened pins in the the deadbolts or lack of shielding around the spindle. This can make the smart lock vulnerable to many forms of forced entry. Companies like Schlage don’t tend to skip these crucial components. Don’t by the knock off locks stick to the name brands that have been in the industry.
  2. The technology being used. While wifi or bluetooth may seem like a really convenient feature it may open the lock up to being hacked.  Stand alone locks like the Schlage BE365 does not have these same vulnerabilities (Schlage BE365 is considered a digital lock not a smart lock because it doesn’t feature wireless technology).
  3. Bolt Driver Technology– This refers to what throws the deadbolt in and out. The typical Smart lock made by companies like Kwikset rely on a nylon driver gear to actuate the bolt. The issue with this is if the strike plate isn’t lined up correctly and there is any friction on the bolt it can cause the gear to prematurely fail or the door to simply not lock. Oftentimes doors tend to settle and over time the bolt will not line up with the hole in the door jamb. As a locksmith we bump into this all the time. Schlage BE365 does not rely on a gear to lock the door. The user has to physically turn a knob and throw the bolt. While this may not be as convenient it is way more reliable.

Conclusion- While smart locks may be convenient, they face many potential problems from shoddy manufacturing, to being able to be hacked as well as premature failure. Our professional recommendation is try to avoid them if possible but if you find you self in a situation where the convenience is a necessity we recommend going with one of the big name brand ones for reliability sake.
